tomorrow afternoon ali and i are heading off to one of the loca catholic schools to talk to year 10 students about life in jail.
these students have recently finished reading the john marsden book "letters from the inside" and they want to talk to us about just what life in prison really is like. personally, i think that they'd need to chat with a few long-term prisoners to gain some insight into that, but seeings as that wont be happening any time soon, i figure two prison nurses are kinda the next best thing. only problem is, i'm shit scared of public speaking and right now i'm freaking out at the thought of shutting down and breaking into a cold sweat in front of 20 or 30 16-year olds...dear me...i hope they're gentle..
with me anyway, cuz i know that ali can hold her own with the best of them, and i doubt that the thought of a room full of hormonal catholic teenagers wont phase her a bit.
our boss told us that while we shouldn't aim to scare them, we do need to be honest about what goes on in prison..about the voilence...how the boys in side fight..even rape each other...it's probably more than i would have wanted to know at that age, but times they are a'changin i guess..
so yeah..
wish me luck..
pray that i dont freak out and turn into a babbling mess in front of these kids..
