listening to: 'goodbye' - patti griffin

fuck it's a small world..earlier on, mum and i drove into town to buy some birthday cards for my nieces (mum's granddaughters), and there was this strange little old italian couple there also looking for cards for their granddaughters..
mum and i were standing in between the two italians, when all of a sudden i noticed mum turn white..
"what is it??" i mouthed..
"look at them"..mum replied in a very bizarre sign language kinda way..
"who are they??" i asked
"nancy's parents" mum replied, still looking as if she'd seen a ghost..

so let me fill you in..nancy, the eldest girl in the family, was adopted out at birth...my mother got pregnant with nancy at a very young age, and as a result, was forced to give her up for adoption..
it wasn't until about 25 years later, that nancy found us, and she filled in all the missing pieces of the puzzle..
turns out, she was *born* and *raised* up here, in morwell, with the lovely little italian couple who i'd just beeen standing in the middle of..

so mum being mum, decided to temp fate
"buying a card for your granddaughter, are you?", she asked lil old lady
"yes" the little old lady replied, "my granddaughter is turning 13 this week"..
"wow.." mum started, "what a coincidence, my grandaughter is turning 13 this week, too.."..
and for anyone who didn't know better, it just looked like 2 lil old ladies standing in the card section and bonding over thoughts of their grandchildren..it was bizarre..
they spoke for a little while, about their grand kids, and their daughters, before mum decided she'd pushed it enough and she said goodbye..
it was weird watching them..very weird, indeed..probably would have been even weirder if it had been nancy watching it, and not me..

but yeah..i just thought that it was a bit of a surreal situation..my mother standing there talking about children to the woman who raised her first-born daughter..

anyway..
i gave mum the christopher reeve book before, and without even opening the front cover, she started crying..she told me how he'd been a great inspiration to her during the 6months she spent in hospital..
"i know mum," i said.."and i thought that, now more than ever, you could use a little bit more inspiration"..and then we both sat there and cried.
